Video: Where do you want to go?

advance advance planner video Jul 16, 2021

Most of us live some sort of fixed routine. Your routine might be a “good” one or a “bad” one. Your daily routine might be intentional or it might be unintentional. Either way, you take specific actions and head in a particular direction.

By the way, if your plan is not to have a plan, you’re as consistent as someone with a detailed plan. “No plan" is actually a plan.

(And, remember, your destination is determined by the direction you move— not by your intentions, your state of mind, your prayers, or any other thing.)

That all means this …

Everyone is heading somewhere. Some people choose to go somewhere on purpose.

The question is not whether or not you have a “life plan,” then. The question is this: Is your plan intentional or are you doing “random”?

If you don’t define your agenda, you'll most likely find yourself serving someone else’s. It may be the agenda of your boss, the agenda of the media, or even the agenda of well-intended friends and family members. Whatever the case, if you don’t define where you want to be, you'll serve some agenda. And, you’ll end up somewhere.

What would life be like if you began with your end in mind,  if you began stepping towards an intentional destination rather than a random one?

What if you looked at your life from the vantage point of what you’d like to see one year down the road?

Or five?

Maybe even ten?

Or even at the very end…?

Stephen Covey writes of attending a funeral— of walking through the lobby of the funeral home, past the mourners, up to the casket… and then noticing that the person in the casket… is you!

Think about the people at your own funeral…

  • What would you want people to say about you?
  • Who would you want to be there?
  • What would you want to be known by?

You probably have a few ideas of things you’d like to hear (if you could hear from your own casket) and a few things you definitely don’t want to hear.

Covey’s point is simply this: If you know what you want in the end, why not start living in that way, now?

And, if you don't know what you want, how will you know whether or not you attain it?

Or, to say it another way: Think about what you want your life to look like— and write it down. That way you possess a “picture” of what the best case scenario is for you. And, more importantly, you know what to build towards.
